We want to thank you for your continued patience over these last few months. In coordination with the governor’s announcement this week regarding indoor fitness facilities, the Kaplan Center will be opening on Saturday, September 12th at 10:00am.

For the fall semester, our hours of operation will be:
Monday – Thursday 6:00am – 10:00pm
Friday 6:00am – 8:00pm
Saturday 10:00am – 7:00pm
Sunday 10:00am – 10:00pm

Over the next week, we will be updating our website and communicating details regarding your membership and important considerations when visiting the Kaplan Center.

The Department of Recreation & Wellness encourages students to apply for employment within our program areas. Approximately 300 students are employed during the academic year. Description: The Business Program Assistant is responsible for assisting the Department of Recreation & Wellness Businesss Operations Staff by completing assigned tasks including payroll duties and other clerical tasks. This individual will serve as a backup for the front desk staff answering phones, assistning customers and representing RecWell in a professional and courteous manner.
Description: The Membership Assistant provides adminstrative and clerical support in the Recreation & Wellness Administrative Suite. Responsibilities include answering phones / taking messages, selling memberships, locker rentals,
personal training sessions, data entry, and other duties as assigned.
Description: Lifeguards are responsible for supervising activities at the Kaplan Center Natatorium. Lifeguards must be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Lifeguards are expected to attend monthly in-services and stay up to date on their skills.
Description: As a swim instructor, you will be responsible for planning and teaching swim lessons to children and/or adults through quality and appropriate instruction. You will be communicating regularly to participants and their parents, if applicable, about their progress. Thorough knowledge of swimming and experience teaching lessons are preferred.
Description: EMT for Club Sports Events are responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency injuries and illnesses during home Club events. This includes assessing the nature and extent of injuries, providing appropriate medical care, communicating with on-site supervisor and professional medical personnel regarding situation, & completing all required documentation.Qualifications: EMTs must have and maintain a Emergency Medical Technician Certification issued by the State of North Carolina.
Description: Intramural Sports Officials are primarily responsible for the accurate and impartial enforcement of sport rules and department policies. Officials must assist with field/court set-up and teardown, communicate with all staff, participants, and spectators professionally, maintain game control and sportsmanship, and represent the Intramural Sports Program appropriately at all times.Intramural Sports Officials are not required to have previous officiating experience however a strong understanding of the sport is recommended.
Description: The Patron Services Assistant provides information regarding facility policies and Recreation & Wellness programs to patrons. The Patron Services Assistant manages access to the facility along with monitoring equipment check out systems. Patron Services Assistants work as a team with other facility employees to ensure the operation of a safe and clean facility. Responds to incidents and accidents in the facility.
Description: The Equipment Technician Assistant (ETA) will report directly to the Equipment Technician and in collaboration with the Fitness Coordinator. The ETA is primarily responsible for weekly and monthly preventative maintenance tasks as required by the manufacture and the department. In addition to regular cleanings and maintenance, ETAs will lead Fitness Assistants on larger, monthly cleaning projects.

Description: The Fitness Assistant provides assistance and information to patrons utilizing exercise room, free weight room, and cardiovascular areas. They ensure the safety and cleanliness of these areas. Fitness Assistants work as a team with other facility employees to ensure the operation of a safe and clean facility. Responds to incidents and accidents in the facility.
Description: Group Exercise Instructors with the Department of Recreation & Wellness will be responsible for teaching safe and effective workouts to students and SRC members. Instructors will educate participants and promote fitness through quality instruction and teaching accurate information. Group Exercise Instructors must be professional and exhibit good communication and time management skills.
Qualifications: Group Exercise Instructors must possess a nationally accredited certification from one of the recognized organization such as, AFAA, ACE, or IFTA. In addition, they may have specialized certifications such as Zumba, YogaFit, TurboKick, etc. Instructors must acquire CPR and First Aid certifications before teaching classes.
Description: Personal Trainers with the Department of Recreation & Wellness will perform one-on-one comprehensive educational fitness programs, which incorporates fitness assessments, assessing client’s current level of fitness, realistic goal setting, motivation, client progress tracking, and health education specific to the client’s needs. Personal trainers will be responsible for instructing clients on proper lifting techniques, contraindications of exercise, and designing programs based on the client’s goals. The personal trainer must be professional and pay close attention during client’s sessions and monitor progress via fitness assessments and program tracking.
Qualifications: Trainers must possess a nationally accredited certification from one of the most recognized organization such as, ACE, ASCM, or NSCA. Trainers must acquire CPR and First Aid certifications before working with clients.
Description: Graphic Designers are responsible for working with Recreation & Wellness Professional Staff and Club Sports Officers to develop a variety of print, electronic, and apparel designs. These staff members must be self-directed, receptive to feedback, able to multi-task and meet deadlines. A proficiency with Adobe Creative Suites and basic photography skills are required.
Description: The Promotions Assistant is responsible for providing on-site photographic and social media coverage of selected department programs and special events. This individual will also work cooperatively with the graphic designer to provide images for marketing materials and web site use.
Qualifications: Applicants must be knowledgeable about various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Vine, and Instagram. Experience using a DLSR camera and photo editing software including Photoshop, Bridge, and Camera Raw is preferred.
Description: Student Photographers have the opportunity to capture unique and compelling moments that highlight the impact of Recreation & Wellness programs and services. Through a combination of photography and videography, these staff members are encouraged to use their creative abilities to record and archive the history of the department. Photographers are responsible for all aspects of the digital work flow leveraging their knowledge of current trends and technology to provide high quality results.

Description: Outdoor Adventures staff members are responsible for the daily operations of the indoor rock climbing facility and Rental and Trip center. Responsibilities in the climbing wall include, but are not limited to: monitoring the overall safety of participants; issuing climbing equipment; monitoring participant check-in and check-out; instructing participants how to properly use equipment; belaying participants; and instructing participants belaying and climbing skills. When in the Rental and Trip center, responsibilities include but are not limited to, processing equipment rentals, reservations, and trip registrations; cleaning, inventory, and maintaining rental and trip equipment; and assisting trip leaders with the preparations of upcoming adventure trips.

Description: The Special Events Assistants provide setup and breakdown services for special events held at the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness. Special Event Assistants work as a team with other Special Events staff and facility employees to ensure the operation of a safe and clean facility. They respond to incidents and accidents in the facility.
Description:Team QUEST hires facilitators to provide experiential education programs for group and team development. Team QUEST facilitators utilize experiential education philosophy to design and deliver meaningful programs for groups based on their intended goals and learning outcomes. Team QUEST facilitators may also become challenge course instructors.
