Special Hours Notice:

We want to thank you for your continued patience over these last few months. In coordination with the governor’s announcement this week regarding indoor fitness facilities, the Kaplan Center will be opening on Saturday, September 12th at 10:00am.

For the fall semester, our hours of operation will be:
Monday – Thursday 6:00am – 10:00pm
Friday 6:00am – 8:00pm
Saturday 10:00am – 7:00pm
Sunday 10:00am – 10:00pm

Over the next week, we will be updating our website and communicating details regarding your membership and important considerations when visiting the Kaplan Center.

Piney Lake, a part of UNC Greensboro since 1956, encompasses 40+ acres of beautiful park-like property situated eight miles south of campus near the community of Pleasant Garden. Piney Lake is the perfect place to unplug, recharge, and get in touch with nature. Whether you are coming to sit on the lakeshore to read a good book or trying out Stand Up Paddleboarding for the first time, Piney Lake has something for everyone!

COVID-19 Updates (9/3/20)


  • Piney Lake capacity is 50 people maximum at this time. Please view the live count of visitors currently at the property. This count is updated at minimum every 30 minutes during hours of operation. 
  • Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are REQUIRED when appropriate social distancing cannot be maintained. 
  • Students with Spartan ID card are permitted effective 8/22/20.
  • Kaplan Center members with ID card are permitted effective 9/12/20.
  • NO guests are permitted at this time. 
  • Hand sanitizer is available at the check-in desk and picnic areas.
  • Disinfecting wipes are provided. Please use them to clean chairs and tables before and after each use.
  • Waterfront activity equipment will be disinfected after each use.
  • The following equipment is available for check out and is disinfected after each use:
    • Disc golf discs 
    • Corn hole bags 
    • Frisbee, footballs, volleyballs, and soccer balls
    • Bocce ball set
    • Grilling utensils
  • The hiking trail, swimming area, watercraft (canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, SUP), and disc golf are still available. 
  • Shuttle Service is available. Current shuttle schedules and safety measures are listed in the Transportation section below. Please note, if you take the shuttle to Piney Lake you may be asked to take one back at a set time to ensure transportation capacities can be met and everyone can return to campus in a timely manner. 
  • Piney Lake staff reserve the right to stop any activity that does not meet our safety standards.
  • Piney Lake staff reserve the right to close Piney Lake at any time for the safety of staff and visitors.

Piney Lake Shuttle Information

  • Spartan ID required for all passengers.
  • Shuttle is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Pick up locations: EUC Circle & Spartan Village (by Bestway).
  • EUC Departures (8/22-9/11):
    • Mon-Fri: 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5pm, 6pm.
    • Sat-Sun: 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5pm, 6pm.
  • Spartan Village Departures (8/22-9/11):
    • Mon-Fri: 2:30pm, 3:30pm, 4:30pm, 5:30pm, 6:30pm
    • Sat-Sun: 12:30pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm, 3:30pm, 4:30pm, 5:30pm, 6:30pm
  • Last return shuttles from Piney Lake is at the closing hour each day.
  • Shuttles are FREE.
  • Pets are not permitted on the shuttle.

Covid-19 Transportation Protocols

  • Each pick up is limited to 6 passengers.
  • Face coverings are required at ALL times while in the shuttle.
  • Each shuttle is limited to a total of 6 passengers.
  • If you take the shuttle you may be asked to take one back at a set time to ensure transportation capacities can be met and everyone can return to campus in a timely manner.
  • Shuttles are disinfected between each trip.
  • Hand sanitizer is available in the shuttle along with extra face coverings if you need one.

Piney Lake Visitor Guidelines


The following guidelines are to be adhered to by staff and visitors of Piney Lake. This list is not all inclusive and it is the discretion of the Piney Lake staff to determine the best course of action or decision for situations or items not listed below. Please also read all COVID-19 policies listed above as some policies below are subject to change. 

  • Access
    • Piney Lake is available at no additional cost to all UNCG students paying the student fee as well as all Kaplan Center Members.
    • Eligible student and Kaplan Center members are permitted up to 4 guests per visit.
    • Guests must be accompanied by a sponsoring UNCG member, bring a photo ID, and sign a waiver upon entry.
    • Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.
    • All waivers for minors MUST be signed by parent or legal guardian. Piney Lake Guest Waiver
    • Piney Lake Weekend Passes are available for UNCG Faculty, Staff, and Alumni that are not Kaplan Center members. For more information CLICK HERE.
  • General Guidelines
    • All vehicles must be parked in the gravel parking lot. No cars, including staff, are permitted elsewhere.
    • Leashed dogs are welcome. Please clean up after your dog.
    • No glass containers.
    • No use of alcohol or other drugs.
    • No smoking (or vaping) or use of any tobacco products.
    • No guns, knives, or weapons of any kind.
    • Use of lodges, challenge courses, and other restricted areas of the property is prohibited.
    • Please respect the private residence on the property.
    • No explicit or offensive language or behavior.
    • Please respect the environment.
    • Please respect other visitors and their experience.
    • Please respect all equipment made available to you. Visitors are responsible for damage and repair costs associated with reckless or negligent use of equipment.
    • Fishing is catch and release only.
    • No fishing near swim area.
    • No motorized watercraft allowed.
    • Personal non-motorized watercraft is permitted (kayaks, canoes, etc.), but must be approved by staff.
    • Obey all posted swimming, watercraft, and other posted guidelines.
    • Please notify staff immediately if you notice any safety concerns or other issues during your visit.
    • Staff reserve the right to close property at any time due to weather or other factors they deem necessary to ensure the safety of the property and our guests.
  • Waterfront Guidelines
    • Swimming permitted only when a lifeguard is on duty.
    • Participants must obey lifeguard instructions.
    • Please keep conversations with lifeguards on stand to a minimum.
    • Swimming allowed only in designated swim area.
    • Participants under the age of 12 years must be supervised by an adult at all times.
    • Swim attire must cover all private areas and be swim appropriate; lifeguards may use their discretion as to what is appropriate and inappropriate swim attire. Swim diapers required for all children not toilet trained.
    • Life jackets and other floatation devices must be Coast Guard approved. Life jackets are available upon request.
    • Inflatables and other swim equipment must be approved by a lifeguard before use.
    • No running or diving head first into shallow water.
    • No watercraft permitted in swimming area.
    • No fishing in swimming area.
    • Horseplay not allowed.
    • No food or drink permitted in water.
  • Watercraft Guidelines
    • Lifeguard must be on duty to use watercraft.
    • Life jackets must be properly fitted and worn while on the water.
    • Participants under the age of 12 years must be accompanied by an adult.
    • Weight and capacity limits of all watercraft must be followed.
    • Standing in canoes, kayaks, or paddle boats is not permitted.
    • No horseplay, rocking, or intentional flipping of watercraft.
    • No watercraft permitted in swimming area.
    • Use of the pier in the middle of the lake is strictly prohibited.
    • Please be courteous with your time if others are waiting to use watercraft.
    • Staff reserve the right to limit access to the water at any time.
  • Water Trampoline Guidelines
    • Participants under the age of 12 years must be accompanied by an adult. No one under the age of 5 is permitted.
    • Personal Flotation Device (PFD) required at all times except when lounging on the trampoline.
    • Participants must remain visible to lifeguards at all times.
    • Participants must swim to the trampoline and get on by using the swim platform. No boarding the trampoline from any watercraft.
    • No more than (3) jumpers on the trampoline at a time.
    • No more than (5) people on the trampoline if lounging only.
    • No more than (2) people on the swim platform at a time.
    • No more than (2) people on the slide at a time. Head first and feet first entry off the slide is permitted.
    • Jumping off the trampoline is not permitted. The swim platform and slide are the only approved exit points off the trampoline.
    • No flipping, pushing, or throwing people off the trampoline.
    • No horseplay on the trampoline (i.e. wrestling or other physical interaction).
    • No participant is permitted under the trampoline at any time.
    • Please be courteous with your time if others are waiting to use the trampoline.
    • Staff reserve the right to limit access to the trampoline at any time.
  • Grill Usage
    • Charcoal grills are provided on a first come, first served basis. No personal grills or stoves are permitted.
    • Check the surrounding area for flammable debris before use.
    • Grill must be supervised at all times by the user.
    • Users must clean the grill after each use.
    • Do not place HOT ashes or coals in the trash can.
    • Please be courteous with your time if others are waiting to use the grill.
  • Piney Lake Group Reservation Information


    The Lakeside Lodge and waterfront are perfect gathering space for meetings, trainings, retreats, and much more. With views of the lake and the surrounding wooded areas, Piney Lake provides a nice escape for your group’s future outings.
