We want to thank you for your continued patience over these last few months. In coordination with the governor’s announcement this week regarding indoor fitness facilities, the Kaplan Center will be opening on Saturday, September 12th at 10:00am.

For the fall semester, our hours of operation will be:
Monday – Thursday 6:00am – 10:00pm
Friday 6:00am – 8:00pm
Saturday 10:00am – 7:00pm
Sunday 10:00am – 10:00pm

Over the next week, we will be updating our website and communicating details regarding your membership and important considerations when visiting the Kaplan Center.

  • March 4, 2014 – UNC Greensboro Student Government Association held open forum on the new student recreation center and budget concerns.
  • January 8, 2014 – The UNC Greensboro Board of Trustees affirms support for the new student recreation center in response to comments during December 6, 2014 meeting.
  • November 3, 2013Frequently Asked Questions document posted to web site.
  • August 2013 – The UNC Greensboro Board of Trustees approved the exterior elevations (design) for the new Student Recreation Center.
  • July 2012 – Two Public meetings were held to receive public input on concerns related
    to the facility design.
  • June 2012 – The property purchase approved by the NC Council of State.
  • May 2012 – A letter of support from three current and former SGA Presidents was sent to the NC Council of State requesting purchase of the Lee Street property for the new recreation center.
  • September 2011 – The Board of Trustees approved selection of RDG Architects for the project.
  • September 2011 – The Board of Trustees appointed a Design Team for the new student recreation center.
  • May 2011 – The project received approval from the North Carolina State Legislature.
  • February 2011 – The UNC Board of Governors approved the fee to build a new 225,000 gsf facility.
  • Fall 2010 – Former Chancellor Dr. Brady held the annual Open Forum on Tuition & Fees – which provides students with an opportunity to give input on the new facility fee.
  • Fall 2010 – Presentation made to the Student Government Association regarding the recreation center project.
  • October-November 2010 – Two Open Forums were held at the Greensboro Coliseum for the Glenwood neighborhood and all interested members of Greensboro.Based on feedback from the Glenwood neighborhood, UNC Greensboro moved the new recreation center location from the corner of Glenwood and Lee Street to the current location on Neal and Lee Street.
  • Spring 2010Campus Recreation staff made presentations to student organizations and gathered input on the facility project.
  • November 2009 – The UNC Greensboro Board of Trustees appointed a Designer to complete a Program Study for a new facility. (Types of spaces that would makeup the facility-i.e. fitness, courts, jogging track, pool, climbing wall).
  • September 2009 – Campus Recreation Facility Needs presentation was given at the Board of Trustees Retreat.
  • April 2009 – An Open Forum was held in the Elliott University Center to discuss the new facility.
  • January 2008 – Brailsford and Dunlavey issued their final study report, which recommended a new, expanded facility.
  • Fall 2007Brailsford and Dunlavey conducted a student survey.
  • October 2007 – Brailsford and Dunlavey consultants conducted focus groups with students.
  • October 2007 – Campus Recreation presented to the Student Fee Committee the internal needs assessment report for a new student recreation center.
  • Fall 2007 – Based on findings of the Campus Recreation internal plan, external recreation study experts Brailsford and Dunlavey were hired to conduct a formal needs assessment.
  • March 2006-January 2007 – Campus Recreation conducted an internal long-term facility plan and needs assessment.
