Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have any experience to attend?
All SOOP experiences require NO previous experience.

How physically demanding are the trips?
There are varying levels of physical exertion within each program and activity that should be considered prior to registering. It is important to consider your current level of physical fitness and any other physical or mental limitations you may have when deciding to participate in any of our activities. For clarification on any activities and the difficulty, please visit the individual program pages for addition details or contact us directly to discuss.

Who are the SOOP Leaders?
Your SOOP leaders will consist of Recreation & Wellness professional staff as well as student leaders. All of our trip leaders maintain certifications in first aid and CPR as well as extensive experience in the activities we offer. Safety is our #1 priority at all times. Although there are inherent risks while traveling and living in the outdoors, we do our best to minimize those risks by following specific policies and procedures for conducting all of our activities. Our goal is to provide each participant with a safe, memorable, and high quality outdoor experience.

What is the food like?
The food is delicious! At least that is what we have heard from past participants. We are routinely complimented on the preparation of nutritious, filling, and tasty meals. We are burning a lot of calories most days, so there is never a shortage of food on hand. Please keep in mind that each meal plan is different for each program due to location and nature of the experience. Food allergies and/or dietary restrictions are common, so please note on your health statement if you require any accommodation for such situations.

How do I contact my student in the event of an emergency?
Detailed procedures are listed under the “Emergency Contact Information” section in the Welcome Packet for your specific program.

How will I know if I am registered?
Once you submit ALL registration paperwork, you will be sent an email confirmation and Welcome Packet for your program. If you think you are registered but have not received a confirmation email, please contact us at: 336-334-5924.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

  • 11 or more business days prior to trip start date: 50% of tuition will be refunded.
  • 10 or less business days prior to trip start date: NO REFUNDS will be provided regardless of circumstances.
  • If we are able to replace your spot with a person on the waiting list we will refund your program tuition less a $30 cancellation fee.
  • Full tuition will be refunded if UNC Greensboro cancels either trip or if enrollment is full when tuition is received.

Can I get picked up or dropped off at a different location?
Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate this arrangement. All programs start and end at UNC Greensboro.

Do I really need all the stuff listed on the packing list?
You are responsible for bringing ALL items as listed in the “Gear Provided by You” section of the packing list. We find that the students that follow the packing list the closest are more likely to have a successful start to their experience.

I want my student to do this, but they aren’t enthusiastic about it. Should I make my student participate?
The quality and benefits of the SOOP experience are directly tied to the participants’ attitudes. The SOOP staff are more than happy to answer the questions and concerns of potential participants, but under no circumstances should anyone be forced, coerced or tricked into attending SOOP.
