Arty Party
Students’ inner creativity was unleashed at last week’s “Arty Party: Painting a Path to Eating Disorder Recovery,” held in the Azalea Room at the Elliott University Center. Part of the Department of Recreation & Wellness’s Mental Health Month activities, the event allowed to students to receive information about eating disorders in a low-key, low-stress environment.
While James Raleigh of Victorious Visions led the students in painting individual works of art, Jill Shaw, registered dietician with the Department of Recreation & Wellness, discussed the causes and effects of eating disorders.
“Practice self-affirmation,” Shaw said, “and limit your exposure to media that tells you that looks are everything.”
According to the Walden Center for Education and Research, as many as 20 percent of college students have or have had an eating disorder such as anorexia and bulimia. If untreated, eating disorders can lead to health complications such as damage to the heart and other body organs.
