I know it’s the end of semester, with finals and projects and everything, but couldn’t a few more people have shown up for the Battle of Market Street, UNCG’s basketball club matchup with NC A&T? Well, if you weren’t there you missed a couple of pretty good games.
Women’s Club Basketball was first, with UNCG pushing within two points of A&T in the last minute before falling 40-34. “They dug a hole and tried to get out of it just a little bit too late, ” said spectator and UNCG fan Sydney Parker, whose daughter coaches the team.
Next up were the men. “I’m pretty excited,” said UNCG sophomore Jared Thomas, who was playing for the Spartans. “It’s good to have a crosstown rivalry.” The UNCG team was pulled from the ranks of the intramural basketball league, but Thomas thought that they were ready. “We’ve got a lot of good guard play and that’ll help.”
UNCG took an early lead before falling behind as the first half progressed. “They look like they’re having a good time,” said UNCG freshman Will Zimmerman. UNCG tied A&T 37-37 with six minutes to go in the second half, but hopes of a last-minute rally were spoiled by a series of A&T free throws that put the Aggies in the lead again. The game ended with a A&T victory, 51-42.
