Frequently Asked Questions

How did this project begin?

The current Student Recreation Center opened in 1992 with 89,676 gross square feet (gsq ft). This was adequate at that time when enrollment was approximately 10,000 students. Over time enrollment increased to the point where the facility was no longer able to meet the demand of students. Existing spaces are only able to accommodate between 50% and 65% of current demand for high priority activities of cardiovascular fitness, group fitness, free weights, weight machines and indoor walking. As a result of significant student enrollment growth since 1992 and facility usage by students, UNC Greensboro is now near the bottom of the UNC system in amount of indoor and outdoor recreation space. In 2007, Brailsford and Dunlavey was hired to conduct a needs assessment related to recreational services. The findings of the assessment indicated the need for additional recreation facilities for campus.

The Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness is designed to serve 18,000 students and is approximately 216,000 sqft.. The new facility will limit overcrowding and ensure equipment and programs are easily accessed to provide students with a healthy avenue for engagement. The center is designed to provide wellness and leisure opportunities for all students. Currently, Recreation & Wellness is the largest employer of students with over 150 student employees. Once opened, the new center will result in the hiring of additional students to work in the facility increasing the number of student jobs on campus.

When will it open?

Construction began in 2014, and will open in the Fall of 2016.

What will UNC Greensboro do with the existing Student Recreation Center?

Where will the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness be located?

This area includes the new Spartan Village residence halls and the new UNC Greensboro police station. The address of the new facility is 1301 W. Gate City Boulevard.

How do I get to the facility?

Several options are available to access the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness. Individuals walking can access the facility through the Pedestrian Underpass on Forest Avenue. The Spartan Chariot will have a drop off/pickup stop outside of the building. Several parking options are available for individuals who must drive to the facility.

Will there be parking at the new facility?

After 5pm, the lot will be open on a first come-first serve basis. Additional parking is available in the Oakland Parking Deck easily accessed through the Pedestrian Underpass.
